I'd meant to blog this on Dec. 7th, with some bit of poignant commentary along the lines of the tarnished legacy of World War II. How the internment of American citizens of Japanese descent marred what could otherwise be considered a righteous fight; and I might, some day. For now, here's a photo.
It's an old one; shot in 2000 when I still used film. (120 Tri-X 400, Fuji 6x9, developed in Acutol.)
So I can help myself remember what's going on in my life.

Sunburst Wallpaper

Everyone likes free stuff. Here's a free wallpaper.
(Thanks to BigHugeLabs for the automatic wallpaper generator).
First Snow Slideshow
More testing of Flickr tools. This time: Slideshow!
I used these images as Christmas cards last year. It's one of those thing I've always intended to do but never got around to. Living in an area with a true winter helped with motivation.

Man In The Sky
Testing the Flickr blogging tools. Image contrast has been increased to enhance texture.

Another test of Flickr badges. I may start presenting discrete photo shoots this way. I still can't get flash to work, so its HTML for now. (Note that the images change every time the page is refreshed).
Iowa State Fair, Pt. 2
More of the midway at twilight. At one point, I almost got on this ride. But then I remembered that I couldn't stand heights. It's a double ferris wheel, with a peak height of about 85ft. (I'm guessing).
8/27/08: Changed the title to "Vertigo."Iowa State Fair
This is from a recent trip to the Iowa State Fair. I went there knowing exactly what I wanted to photograph. I knew the composition; I knew the angle and the color values; and I knew the ride that I wanted in the composition. I wanted to capture the midway at twilight.
The combination of the vivid yellow, orange, and red lights against the deep blue sky are absolutely beautiful to me. It matches what I visualized days before, but I still don't think I nailed it.
In any event, it was good to revisit night/low-light shooting. More to come.

Clearing Storm
I took this a little too late. It's the price you pay for needing to retrieve equipment you don't have at the ready (in this case, a tripod). I promise this scene was much more dramatic a few moments before I took it. As is, it's more of a record of the view than "fine art."
Sunburst
While I was living in California, one of the most beautiful (yet rare) optical phenomenon I would see was a halo. A perfect, circular rainbow (or icebow, technically) surrounding the sun; caused by ice crystals in high, thin cirrus clouds. In Iowa, a much more common, somewhat more majestic event are crepuscular rays. The bright streaks of light caused by gaps between clouds or peaks that are usually seen near sunset. You can see a broad swath of them radiating out from the sun in a V-shape pointing either up or down (depending on position) or in the form of an angled column. With the near-constant late-afternoon storms in the area you see them often.
Everyone's seen them; if not in person then on inspirational posters and book covers everywhere. That's why I tend not to photograph them unless I can find an uncommonly beautiful composition, or it's uncommonly weird.
It's a little bit of both with the above photo. This might not be the final version that I'll end up hanging sometime, but it is a little odd. It may not be all that clear at such a small size, but the light is radiating outward from the sun in all directions. The clouds are casting shadows directly between the sun and the viewer (er, me), not down towards the ground some distance away, or toward the viewer from a narrower angle. It wasn't that late in the day; around 3:00. Something about the air here makes the light streaks more visible. Something about the humidity, or perhaps a particulate. In any event, it's another example of how beautiful the Iowan sky can be.

SNR: Signal to Noise Ratio
www.flickr.com
|
This is an experiment with Flickr badges. It shows five random images from my Signal:Noise set on Flickr. It's a series that I've been slowly working on for years and will hopefully continue to work on for years to come. However, it's one of the hardest to find appropriate images for. More commentary on this set, and the criteria that make it difficult to shoot for, to come.

SF at Night

But in all seriousness, mostly I wanted to see how this image looked with the blog's current color scheme.

First Post
I hope to update here regularly; letting people know where I am and what I'm doing. I also hope to keep anyone who's interested abreast of when I'm having a show, when I have a new book available, etc. But my primary goal is to share my photographic work more or less right after it's produced (sometimes while in the field). Let's see how well I can keep up.
